Conservation Commission

Conservation Comm. meets monthly on Tuesdays. Please check agenda.

The Weymouth Conservation Commission serves the town in a regulatory and advisory way. This is the principal town agency with the duty of protecting our aquatic natural resources.

The Commission has several functions. It can advise other boards on conservation matters. It can accept gifts of land or money for conservation purposes. And it does the planning for projects concerning our environment.

But perhaps the most significant impact of the Commission results from its administration of the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act and the Weymouth Wetlands Protection Ordinance. The links above provide information on wetlands, wetlands protection, and the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act.

Compared to the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act , the Weymouth Wetlands Protection Ordinance protects additional wetland interests and protects some resource areas more stringently (primarily isolated wetlands and vernal pools). The Commission has adopted local regulations which include required setbacks from wetland resource areas (typically 25 feet for residential projects and 50 feet for commercial and industrial projects).

The Weymouth Conservation Commission typically meets monthly at 7:00 p.m. on a Tuesday. Please see the town website calendar or call the Conservation Commission for information on upcoming meetings. To be scheduled for a Notice of Intent or Request for Determination hearing, a complete application must be submitted at least 15 days prior to the meeting date. The Conservation Commission will post the required legal ad; the applicant will be billed directly by the newspaper.

The “Information for Applicants” and “Links and Relevant Info” sections to the left provide general information on wetlands and wetlands protection, and provide specific links to relevant laws, regulations, filing forms and fee schedules.
