RESPONSIBILITIES:

The DPW Engineering Division designs infrastructure improvement projects such as new water mains installations, cleaning and lining of water mains, storm drain system improvements, sanitary sewer system extensions, seawall repairs, roadway and intersection design, and other public works projects. Staff provides construction inspection of public works projects and subdivision developments. Land surveying is conducted to support town projects, requests from other town departments, and resident requests for street line location (on public ways). Technical support is provided to all Public Works divisions and town departments upon request. Projects are reviewed as part of Special Permit/Variance Applications, Subdivision Approval, and Building Permit applications. Building address numbers are assigned here during the building permit process or as otherwise required.

The Engineering Division produces, updates and provides public access to the town atlas/assessors maps, plans of land, easement plans, taking plans, as-built sewer and drainage record plans, and various town maps (streets, zoning, voting precincts/districts, water distribution system, sanitary sewer collection system, storm drain system, etc.). The division is working with the town's Geographic Information System (GIS) Administrator in creating and updating GIS datalayers and databases containing all of the same features shown on the town maps described above (see the town GIS web page for more information).

Records kept on file include deeds, plot plans, recorded plans, microfilm records, survey field books, and various plans that have been produced by or provided to the division over the years. Copies of plans and other documents on file are available for fees ranging from $0.50 (8½" x 11") to $7.00 (36" x 50") per print. Research time is billed at $4 per 15 minutes.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: Does the Engineering Division have a copy of my plot plan on file?
A: If a building permit plan was submitted to the Engineering Division, a copy will be on file and copies can be purchased at a nominal fee.

Q: Where can I get a copy of my deed?
A: The Engineering Division maintains a copy of deeds for property transfers in the Town of Weymouth and copies are available at a nominal fee.

Q: Can the Engineering Division locate my property line?
A: If the property is on an accepted public way, the Engineering Division can stake the location of the street right-of-way line that abuts that side of the property. The property corners will not be located since that is a private matter. It is recommended that any resident who is investing in property line landscaping or fences, have his/her property staked out by a registered land surveyor.
