Chief’s Message

Welcome to the official web site of the Weymouth Fire Department.

The Town of Weymouth was first incorporated in 1622 under the name Wessagusset. The name was changed to Weymouth in 1635 following an influx of settlers from Weymouth, England.

Fire protection began with the establishment of a Volunteer fire-engine company named "Aquarius" in 1807. The Weymouth Fire Department was established by the vote of the townspeople in 1877 with five wards established. Engine companies were given the names “Active”, “General Bates”, “Amazon”, “Rescue” and “Conqueror”. Hook and Ladder trucks included “Eureka”, “Hardscrabble” and “Resolute”. “Extinguisher” was the name given to the chemical engine in Ward 5.

A Gamewell Fire Alarm system was first installed in 1888 using 10 boxes and six miles of wire. The first permanent, full-time employee of the Weymouth Fire Department was Superintendent of Fire Alarms H. L. Humphrey, hired in 1895.

There have been nine Chiefs of Department, the first of whom was Chief John Quincy Hunt. Chief Hunt was appointed Fire Chief in 1927, but he died while working at Box 23 in Jackson Square on October 8, 1929; the first member of the Department to die in the line-of-duty.

I am proud to have served the residents of Weymouth since 1983 and to have led the Weymouth Fire Department since October 4, 2002. I look forward to the start of our third century with a continuing devotion to service, pride and commitment.

I hope you enjoy your visit!

Robert J. Leary
