Introducing Downloadable Audio Books

What Are Digital Audio Books?
Digital audio books are downloadable versions of audio books, similar to what you might find in cassette or CD format.Digital audio books can be downloaded to your computer and used offline. You can copy them to an mp3 player for portable listening. Most titles can be burned to CD. Digital audio books are automatically returned, so there is no need to worry about late fees.

OCLN’s ‘E-Audio” service allows you to download full length audio books to your PC. Once downloaded, you may listen to the file on your PC or transfer it to an MP3 player. Most titles may be burned to compact disc.Anyone with a library card from an OCLN member library is welcome to use the service. You may borrow up to 2 titles at a time. The titles remain active on your PC for the 7 day loan period. At the end of the loan period the Microsoft Digital Rights Management (DRM) component will disable the file on your computer, and the item will be automatically checked in. You may place one title on hold. You will be notified by email when the title is available and will have 72 hours to check out the title.

Getting started:

  1. To start using the service, go to www.ocln.org/eaudio and download and
    register the OverDrive Media Console.
  2. Browse the collection, when you find a title that you want, put it in your eBookBag.
You may listen to an excerpt, if you wish to hear a sample of the book.
  3. Login with your OCLN barcode and PIN and check out the book.
  4. Download the book and enjoy!

Frequently Asked Questions:

How large are the E-Audio files?
A typical book is about 15 hours long. The total file size is about 256 MB.

Do I have to download the entire book at once?
No. The E-Audio books are broken into files, each the length of a standard compact disc. You can download a portion to listen to immediately and download the remainder at a more convenient time.

What do I do once I have downloaded the book?
You may listen to the book on your PC or you can load the book on an MP3 player. Many titles may be burned to compact disc.

How long is the loan period?
You have 7 days in which to download the title and copy it to your MP3 player or compact disc.

What happens at the end of the loan period?
The files on your PC expire at the end of the loan period. The file is not deleted until you delete the title from the
Overdrive Media Console.

To which devices can I transfer OverDrive Audio Book titles?
Visit www.playsforsure.com/FindPortableDevices.aspx for a list of MP3 players that work with this service. Be sure to check the device documentation to determine whether the device supports the bit rate of 32kbps or is able to transcode 32kbps files to a supported bit rate.

Does this service work with Apple iPod players or Macintosh computers?
No. Unfortunately, Apple’s Digital Rights Management (DRM) Software is incompatible with the DRM used by Overdrive.

Who pays for this service?
This service is paid for by the OCLN Member Libraries.
