Weymouth’s Whipple Senior Center provides community services for residents ages 60 and older, which comprise 24 percent or nearly one of every four persons living in Weymouth. In April of 2016, Mayor Hedlund and the Weymouth Town Council appropriated $560,000 in surplus and reserve funds to improve the buildings and grounds of the senior center, including a new gymnasium floor and roof, new handicapped accessible doors and ramps, parking lot repairs with additional handicapped parking, exterior paint and signage, and park improvements to the back field, featuring a new pavilion, walking path, seating, and play areas for bocce ball, pickle ball, and horse shoes. The senior center further received $50,000 through a state budget appropriation in fiscal year 2016, which funded major renovations to the center’s billiards and computer rooms, including carpeting, fixtures, entertainment systems, game tables, lighting, paint, printers, SMART boards, storage, and window treatments. Furniture for these rooms was generously donated by the Massachusetts State Surplus Property Office and the Furniture Trust of Boston. Additional improvements to the senior center were completed with grant funding through the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs and generous donations from the Friends of the Council on Aging, Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office, North Weymouth Civic Association, and FoxRock Properties of Weymouth.

This event is open to the public. All are welcome to attend. Live music will be performed by Olde Kids on the Block, an 18-piece swing orchestra that revives the big band sounds of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, with vocals provided by Mara Castle.
