Wessagusset and Lane Beach improvements planned for 2017 summer season

Weymouth, MA – Mayor Robert Hedlund announced today that in addition to the upgrades made to George Lane Beach during his first year in office, additional improvements, programs, and staffing will be implemented for the upcoming summer season at Lane and Wessagusset Beaches.

Last year, the Department of Public Works acquired a new surf rake for cleaning and grading the beaches. Also installed last year were new floats for the ever-popular swimming lessons program offered by the Town’s Recreation Division. This year, a new basketball court and small tot lot play structure will be added at Lane Beach.

“With the increased visitation at the beaches, I’m excited to expand on the improvements we made last year,” said Mayor Hedlund. “George Lane and Wessagusset Beach are increasingly popular summertime destinations for our residents.”

Staffing schedules for lifeguards at both beaches and additional programing at Wessagusset Beach are included in this year’s program of activities as the Recreation Division is gearing up for the 2017 summer season. Improvements to the Wessagusset Beach parking lot are also planned.

“It’s great to see the Old Beach getting the attention it deserves,” said Rebecca Haugh, District 1 Councilor. “I hope by expanding the recreation program at this location, significant improvements can be made to make the Old Beach not only much more aesthetically pleasing, but also much safer for beach goers.”
