The Kibby Property is a conservation partnership between the Town of Weymouth and the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR).
In 2010, the Town partnered with DCR to acquire a conservation restriction (CR) on 1.3 acres of commercial property located on the shores of the Weymouth Back River. This land, previously owned by Richard Kibby, directly abuts Abigail Adams State Park to the west and was acquired with a combined $339,000 in local Community Preservation funds and $161,000 in Massachusetts open-space acquisition funds.
Between 2015 and 2016, the Town developed the Kibby Property to increase public access and enhance opportunities for passive recreation. The resulting park features a looped walking path, a formal entrance from Abigail Adams State Park, and seating areas with waterfront views. DCR will maintain the land in partnership with the Town, and parking will be shared with Abigail Adams State Park.
The Kibby Property was dedicated in October 2016. The park preserves access to approximately 230 feet of natural shoreline, expands the area of contiguous open space at Abigail Adams State Park by 10%, and adds approximately 600 feet of paved trails to the Weymouth Back River Trail system.
