Chief of Police Butler a 35 year veteran of the Weymouth Police Department, was struck by a vehicle as he attempted to stop a motorist who was driving without the headlights on. Chief Butler had stepped out of his home (1027 Pleasant Street)on his way to work when he saw the vehicle approaching with the headlights off. Chief Butler stepped into the middle of the street and signaled to the driver to stop. The drunk driver struck Chief Butler, the force of which threw him some distance. The car then ran over his body. Chief Butler was transported home by two of his children where he died of a fractured skull and broken back. The motorist was arrested and charged with manslaughter. The operator was later convicted of OUI and sentenced to 1 year in the Dedham House of Corrections.
