The Weymouth World War II Veteran Memorial

American Flag WavingWeymouth residents have a very proud and rich history of rising to the call of service to their country. During World War II over 3500 Weymouth men and women entered the ranks of our Armed Forces to defend their country.

This "Greatest Generation", as they would become known, stood in long lines to volunteer in our time of need. Their actions would secure our freedom and, in turn, set the course of history. They responded in very large numbers, leaving the comforts of home and family to serve in foreign lands facing untold dangers. Many were either killed in action or shed their blood in order to insure that our freedom and democratic way of life would survive.

The Weymouth World War II Veteran Memorial was developed as an Eagle Scout project by resident Greg Mannke. He chose to honor the men and women from Weymouth, Massachusetts who served in World War II by setting up the Memorial web site. It was his hope that in some small way the project can capture a piece of this valuable history with this memorial, dedicated to the brave Weymouth men and women who served so selflessly and gave so much yet asked for so little.

The project has three distinct phases:
Phase I – To build a local Memorial Web site, similar to the one in Washington D.C., where friends and families of Weymouth veterans could visit and learn about Weymouth’s Greatest Generation person by person.

Phase II – To complete the database of the over 3500 names by organizing and leading a group of volunteers who will canvas the VFW Posts, American Legion Halls, Libraries, Shopping Malls and elderly homes to gather the untold stories and veteran details to help fill in the many voids.

Phase III – Coordinate with the National World War II Veterans Memorial to insure that all Weymouth World War II veterans are registered.

If you have information that you wish to share about a Weymouth World War II veteran, please visit the web site and register them. There is a story behind each and every one of them and it begs to be captured and told to generations to come. With your help we can fill in the many blanks and create a comprehensive and lasting memorial to these brave men and women.
