Town of Weymouth seeks public input on Complete Streets Prioritization Plan

Mayor Hedlund and the Department of Planning and Community Development will update the town’s 2016 Tier 2 Prioritization Plan

The Town of Weymouth has partnered with Green International Affiliates to develop a Complete Streets Prioritization Plan with funding from the MassDOT grant program. Cities and towns with an approved Prioritization Plan are eligible for construction funding up to once a year through the Program. Funding is competitively awarded based on availability, program priorities, and the number of applicants.

A "Complete Street" is one that provides safe, accessible options for people of all ages and abilities and all modes of travel. Designing streets with these principles contributes to the health, safety, and quality of life in a community by improving the pedestrian and vehicular environments and providing safer, more convenient travel options between the places people live, learn, work and play.  Complete Streets are designed to integrate the needs of all users including pedestrians, cars, trucks, freight, cyclists, transit riders and people with disabilities. Emphasis in the plan is put on safety and usability, within the context and constraints of the roadway.  This process involves assessing a number of needs such as pedestrian connections, safe pedestrian crossings and safe bicycle routes.

In addition to professional assessment and observation, public input in this process is important and welcomed. As part of the project, an online tool has been set up to allow residents and interested parties to comment directly about the project. In order to inform the project team of issues that should be addressed, anyone who has experienced a problem or has an idea related to street safety and travel options in Weymouth is encouraged to access the Town of Weymouth Complete Streets Wikimap which can be accessed from the red alert section of the Planning & Community Development Department Page on the Town’s website at www.weymouth.ma.us.

“Improving traffic conditions by focusing on both pedestrian and vehicle safety is a high priority for me.  This is a great opportunity for the public to provide their input through the wikimap,” said Mayor Hedlund.
