Mayor Hedlund Announces Relief for Weymouth Taxpayers during the COVID-19 Crisis

Mayor Robert Hedlund announced that the Town of Weymouth has adopted several local options approved by the state to bring relief to Weymouth taxpayers during the COVID-19 crisis.

Last week, the state Legislature passed and Governor Baker signed “An Act to Address Challenges Faced by Municipalities and State Authorities Resulting From COVID-19.” The new law gives Mayors the authority to extend due dates for real and personal property tax payments and applications for exemptions and to waive interest and penalties on certain municipal tax and other bills paid by June 30, 2020.

Mayor Hedlund has used the authority granted to extend the due dates of the following bills:

Fourth Quarter Real Estate and Personal Property Tax Bills:

            Original Due Date: May 1, 2020

            New Due Date: June 1, 2020

Motor Vehicle Excise Taxes:

Any bills issued with a due date of March 10, 2020, or later are now due on June 1,     2020, regardless of the due date printed on the bill.

Water and Sewer Utility Bills:

Any bills issued with a due date of March 10, 2020, or later are now due on June 1,     2020, regardless of the due date printed on the bill.

Exemption and Deferral Applications:

Mayor Hedlund is also extending the due date of Property Tax Personal Exemption and Tax Deferral Applications:

            Original Due Date: April 1, 2020

            Extended Due Date: June 1, 2020

In addition, Mayor Hedlund is waiving all interest and other penalties until July 1, 2020 in the event of a late payment of any real estate, personal property, motor vehicle excise, water/ sewer utility bill with a due date of March 10, 2020 or later. Weymouth taxpayers now have until June 30, 2020 to make the payment without incurring interest or other penalties.

Under the new state law, payments made after June 30, 2020 will be subject to interest and penalties back to the due date of June 1.

Weymouth taxpayers are encouraged to use the town’s online payment option to conveniently pay real estate, personal property, excise taxes, and water/sewer bills. As previously announced, Mayor Hedlund has waived the online convenience fee (which is charged by the vendor, not the Town) for credit card payments.
