On October 2nd, Town officials from Weymouth and Braintree were joined by BETA Engineering to review the next steps for Phase II of the Landing Culvert Replacement Project. At the meeting, Staff and BETA reviewed the construction timeline and traffic management plan then answer any questions from attendees. All local business owners and residents are encouraged to attend.

Traffic Management Phases

The Landing Culvert Replacement Project will be comprised of 5 phases. Each Phase will have a unique traffic management plan as the culvert is installed across the length of Washington Street. See below for Phase I and Phase II of the traffic management plan. Due to the need to reduce travel lanes, all travelers are encouraged to seek alternate routes during the Culvert Replacement.

Phase I: The travel lanes on the eastern side of Washington Street (in front of El Sarape and the Morante building) will be closed. Traffic will be reduced to two lanes heading North up Washington Street (from Weymouth to Braintree) and one lane heading South down Washington Street (from Braintree to Weymouth) from 7AM to 10AM. This will then change to 2 lanes heading South and one lane heading North from 10AM to 7AM. This shift will accommodate rush hour traffic.

Phase II:  The middle lanes of Washington Street will be closed. Traffic will be reduced to two SPLIT lanes heading North up Washington Street (from Weymouth to Braintree) and one lane heading South down Washington Street (from Braintree to Weymouth) from 7AM to 10AM. This will then change to 2 lanes heading South and one lane heading North from 10AM to 7AM. This shift will accommodate rush hour traffic.

About Phase II - Landing Culvert Replacement

Phase II of the daylighting project will provide for the replacement of 90 feet of the Smelt Brook culvert under Commercial Street. Phase I of the project uncovered or “daylighted” the Smelt Brook, a subterranean stream that runs beneath the Landing, and creates a new streamside walkway and pedestrian plaza as part of the Weymouth Landing revitalization efforts that have spurred four new mixed use developments, creating 164 new housing units. By replacing the deteriorated culvert beneath Commercial Street, Phase II funding ensures that the value generated by Phase I is protected from serious road closures, detours, and traffic jams that could be caused by a culvert collapse.
