Are you a teen who's looking for community service hours this summer? We have a fun opportunity for you. If you like working with kids, you can assist us in the Children's Room with our READ to BEAD program. We will be scheduling teens to spend two hours a day in the role of Bead Banker. You will be expected to sit at the Bead Bank Desk and register children for the program and distribute beads to participants. See more details of how the program will be run below:
How it works:
Children may register online or at the Tufts Library. If registering at the library, Bead Bankers will enter the child's information on our Chromebook using a Google Form. Each child will receive a 24" Ball Chain necklace, complete with a library brag tag.
Children then will keep track of how many minutes they read each day on a reading log provided by the library. At each visit, the child will report how many minutes they've read since their last visit to the Bead Banker. They will earn beads to add to their necklaces to represent those minutes read. Children are able to visit the Bead Bank once per visit. Beads will be earned and traded in the following manner:
Ideally, we would like to have at least one volunteer working at the Bead Bank throughout the day. Most volunteer sessions will be two hours in length (Except on Friday afternoons when the library closes at 5PM). We will only have two bead bankers working at one time. The program will run from July 2nd through August 17th.
How to reserve your volunteer days/times:
We are using an online sign-up program which will allow you to schedule your own time. Please create a MySignUpGenius account the first time your visit the site. This will allow you to log in to see all of your time slots in one space. You will also be able to adjust your times yourself if necessary. In order to accomodate all interested teens, we ask that intitially, you limit your sign-ups to 2 hours per day, with a maximum of 4 hours per week. After June 30th, you may sign-up for more hours if space is available. If you have any questions, you may contact Shaun, Chris or Amy in the Children's Room.
