Weymouth Awarded $100,000 for Clean Energy Updates through State’s Green Communities Program

The Department of Energy Resources (DOER) has awarded Weymouth a Green Communities 2022 Competitive Grant for $100,000. This is the Town’s sixth grant award since being designated a Green Community in 2015 resulting in the Town’s total investment in green updates and improvements of nearly $1,300,000.

Weymouth is one of 271 municipalities participating in the Green Communities program, representing over 77% of the Commonwealth. To date the Town has received $277,635 in FY17, $250,000 in FY18, $250,000 in FY19, and $225,373 in FY20 totaling over $1M in Green Communities grant awards. Once the Town achieved this level of awards, it became eligible for an additional $100,000 in 2022.

In addition to previous annual savings of $23,882 resulting from upgrades, these improvements are estimated to save the Town another $6,161.42 per year in energy costs.

The award will fund LED lighting upgrades in the amounts of $11,840 for the Lawrence W. Pingree school and $30,391 for the Abigail Adams Middle School. Furthermore, the Town will invest grant funds of $17,192 at the Wessagusset Elementary School, $30,738 at the Ralph Talbot Elementary school and $9,839 at the School Administration Building in Weatherization projects.

Mayor Hedlund commented, “The improvements that will be completed through this grant award, are indicative of the Town’s continued efforts to conserve energy which have saved the Town and in turn the tax payers tens of thousands of dollars each year.”
