On August 19th, work will commence on the redirecting of a sewer line along Commercial Street in Weymouth. The Town recently awarded a contract for the work to Caliacco Corporation of Weymouth to re-direct the existing line in Weymouth Landing and demolish the existing pump station. This is part of the many infrastructure improvements taking place in the Landing in order to achieve the redevelopment of the Village Center.

Work will be conducted from 9PM – 5AM, Monday through Friday, beginning on August 19th and concluding on August 29th.

During construction the roadway will be decreased to one lane in each direction and there will be no parking along the west side of Commercial Street between Front Street and Brookside Road.

There will be no parking along Commercial Street in front of Peking Kitchen, Simply Polished, and Washington Street Liquors beginning at 9PM. Parking will become available after 5AM daily.

“The sewer redirect is the next step of several to continue to revitalize the Landing,” said Mayor Hedlund. “The Town’s efforts to make the Landing a viable Village Center - through the daylighting of Smelt Brook, adoption of a new zoning district, and recent approval of several mixed-use developments - is complemented by necessary infrastructure improvements such as the re-direction and connection to the existing sewer line.”

The Town worked with the awarded contractor to establish a viable traffic management plan that would be the least disruptive to the businesses and traffic travelling through the Landing. As part of the plan, the roadway will be covered with steel plates during the day so that traffic and parking will be unaffected outside of the work hours. Although the work may be noisy, it was determined that night work would have a limited impact on traffic and reduce the number of total working days required to complete the project.

“The Town worked to mitigate the impact the project would have on traffic in the Landing. We conducted several meetings with business owners and the Town’s engineers, hosted a forum prior to the commencement of the work with the Construction Manager, and kept everyone apprised of the project process,” said Robert Luongo, Director of Planning and Community Development. “We have made efforts to minimize the impact as much as possible through the use of night work and an expedited timeline”.

The sewer re-direction project is the next step in the Weymouth Landing Smelt Brook Project. This re-direction will allow for the underutilized pump station, located adjacent to the Delegas property, to be demolished and the space freed up for another use. Following the completion of this work, the Town will begin Phase II of the MassWorks grant-funded Smelt Brook Daylighting project which will see the replacement of the culvert underneath Commercial/Washington Street. That Phase is anticipated to begin at the end of September. The Town will be issuing details about traffic re-routing prior to the commencement of the culvert work.
