New inline hockey rink dedicated at Stella Tirrell Park

Weymouth Recreation and Town councilors dedicated a new inline hockey rink at Stella Tirrell Park during “Christmas in Columbian Square” on December 13.  Families and local officials celebrated the facility’s opening with a pickup game played by over 30 youngsters from Weymouth.  The rink will benefit the growing number of local youths wanting to play hockey.

Interest in creating an inline rink was first voiced during the public review process for Legion Memorial Field and Lovell Playground back in March.  By converting the old tennis courts at Stella Tirrell Park into a high-quality street hockey facility along with the other renovations, the Town had an opportunity to meet a growing demand. The overall project costs at the park were approximately $100,000 and were funded by meals tax revenue.  An additional $50,000 in Community Preservation Act funds were allocated to install hockey boards, goals and equipment.

The Weymouth Recreation Advisory Committee, the Weymouth Planning Department, the Community Preservation Committee, the Weymouth Town Council and the Town Administration all took an active interest in getting this project done.  Support from Weymouth Youth Hockey and the hockey community helped push the project forward as a way to give everyone a chance to participate in an increasingly popular sport.

The inline rink will be open year round to the public.  Other renovations at Stella Tirrell Park, funded by meals tax revenue, include batting cage improvements, a new gateway at Union Street, new picnic benches, team benches, the removal of old bleachers, and the seal coating and painting of the basketball court.
