Safe Streets and Roads for All Safety Action Plan | Vision Zero Plan

The Town of Weymouth has been awarded a $336,000 Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) established the SS4A discretionary program with $5 billion in appropriated funds over 5 years, 2022-2026. The SS4A program funds regional, local, and Tribal initiatives through grants to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries. The Town of Weymouth is committing to this vision and has begun the effort that will result in a Safety Action | Vision Zero Plan allowing the community as a whole to participate in its development and its long-term support.

This project website brings valuable information and interesting data to the community residents and employers that will provide the foundation for developing the Safety Action Plan. The website will continue to be updated during the project and visitors will have access to project documents, links to surveys, and see key announcements. We encourage you to explore the site, take opportunities to participate in your community's concerted effort to improve roadway safety, and periodically come back to see what is new.

WHAT IS VISION ZERO?

The Weymouth Safety Action Plan | Vision Zero Plan is a strategy to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries among all road users, and to ensure safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all. While often referred to as “accidents,” the reality is that we can prevent these tragedies by taking a proactive, preventative approach that prioritizes traffic safety by implementing a Safe System approach.

The Safe System Approach has been embraced by the transportation community as an effective way to address and mitigate the risks inherent in our enormous and complex transportation system. It works by building and reinforcing multiple layers of protection to both prevent crashes from happening in the first place and minimize the harm caused to those involved when crashes do occur. It is a holistic and comprehensive approach that provides a guiding framework to make places safer for people.

Keep in mind that this is an important shift from a conventional safety approach because it focuses on both human mistakes AND human vulnerability and designs a system with many redundancies in place to protect everyone. And being proactive rather than reactive. It is a challenge for sure, but the rewards are immense.

Safe System Approach

WHY DO WE NEED IT? HOW WILL THIS HAPPEN?

Every year in Weymouth, people lose their lives, and more are severely injured while traveling on streets. These deaths and injuries are unacceptable and preventable, and Weymouth is committed to stopping further loss of life.

Making a commitment to zero traffic deaths means addressing all aspects of safety through five overarching program focus areas. Our focus areas are based on FHWA’s Safe System approach that, together, creates a holistic approach with layers of protection for all road users. Our focus areas are:

  • Promote a Culture of Safety
  • Enhance Process and Collaboration
  • Build Safe Streets for Everyone
  • Create Safe Speeds
  • Make Data-Driven Decisions

    GET ENGAGED WITH VISION ZERO!

Community engagement is a major component of making Vision Zero successful. When it comes to experience and knowledge of how a neighborhood works, no one knows better than the people who live there. Assessing which needs are greatest requires complementing a data-driven approach with robust community engagement.

We can make progress and save lives in the fight for safety by working together and each doing our part.
