Weymouth Veterans Memorial Wall is Seeking Names of Veterans

Almost 100 years ago, with great pomp and circumstance, the Town of Weymouth established the Weymouth Veterans Memorial Wall (WVMW). It is located on Middle St within the Ralph Talbot Amphitheater, between Town Hall and the Cross of Gray, and across the street from Libby Field.

The WVMW proudly bears the names of thousands of Weymouth residents who have answered their country’s call during a time of conflict. Names are embossed in bronze and represent many of the conflicts throughout the history of the Town. For a community that recently celebrated its 400th Anniversary, there are many conflicts represented, even dating prior to the establishment of the United States.

The Town is hoping Veterans and their families will take the time to ensure loved ones are honored and remembered by including their names alongside the Veterans’ friends and neighbors already on the various plaques on the wall. We hope to be able to include every eligible Veteran on this memorial.

Currently, there are names that need to join their peers on the World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War plaques. Those names are currently listed on the Roll of Honor Wall across the street. Veterans’ names were missed when compiling the roster when the most recent plaques were cast and we are attempting to correct this oversight.

A second effort is to establish the Gulf War plaques. Weymouth has almost 500 names of eligible residents who have served since August 2, 1990 through today. Because there has not been an official end to the Gulf War era, The Town will recognize two periods of the Gulf War, those who served between 8/2/1990 and 9/10/2001 and those who have served since 9/11.

Veterans Services and Mayor Hedlund’s office are hoping to finalize the roster of those names missing so the Town can recognize everyone eligible. Our goal is to finalize the roster by Memorial Day 2024 so we can unveil the new names on Veterans Day. In order to be eligible, the Veteran must meet three criteria:  1. Weymouth must be stated on their discharge, either as the place they lived when they enlisted or where they immediately returned to from Active Duty. This includes those Reservists and Guard-members who were activated and called to Active Duty. 2. Veteran must have served at least one day during the conflict period. 3. Veteran must have served Honorably per discharge. Finally, the Veteran or surviving family member must sign a consent form to be added.

If you know of anyone who MIGHT be eligible, please call the Weymouth Veterans Office at 781-340-2405. They will research the name and be able to tell you if the Veteran is eligible to join those already permanently honored.
