What is a Variance?

A variance is an authorization granted by the Board of Zoning Appeals (unless another body is granted such power) waiving a requirement of the Weymouth Zoning Ordinance as it pertains to land development, dimensional standards, and setbacks requirements. In effect, a variance is an "exception" to the rules of the Zoning Ordinance. A variance can only be granted when specific standards or criteria are met.
