Urban Heat Island Study with the Conway School

Hello!

We are writing to invite you to an online engagement opportunity to discuss quality of life in a growing Weymouth. We are a group of graduate students studying ecological landscape design and planning at Te Conway School in Northampton, MA. We are currently working on a climate resilience planning project for the town of Weymouth. As recently as 2022, professional assessments of Weymouth have identified increased impervious surface area, a reduction in vegetative cover, and urban heat island effect as obstacles to improving Weymouth residents’ quality of life now and in the future. Our project goal is to provide a toolkit for the town that helps mitigate these negative impacts. Our project’s core contacts in Weymouth are members of the Department of Planning and Community Development and the conservation commission.

If you are reading this message, you have been identified as a stakeholder within the scope of our project, and we are interested in sharing some of our initial findings with you and in getting your input on Weymouth’s present and future.

If you’re interested in any of the following topics, we’d love to speak with you:

  • cooling strategies for/public health impacts of hotter weather
  • tree canopy and shade
  • coastal and inland flooding
  • policy changes to zoning, ordinances and bylaws regarding development
  • green infrastructure opportunities and incentives
  • stormwater treatment strategies
  • aquatic ecosystem health
  • ecological restoration

Sessions will be held on February 8 in the afternoon and evening; please sign up for one of these sessions here. Thank you very much in advance for your time and participation!

Sincerely,

Ben Silverstone, Lion Waxman, and Isabella Yeager
