Building plans for the new Tufts Library include obtaining the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Projects pursuing LEED certification earn points for various green building strategies across several categories. MPLCP projects that achieve LEED certification are eligible for additional grant funds through the Green Library Incentives Program. LEED-certified libraries can receive incentives totaling 2% to 3.5% of their total MPLCP award.

The new Tufts Library is tracking to receive LEED Silver Certification by 2022.

What is a green building?

As described by the U.S. Green Building Council, a 'green building' is a holistic concept that starts with the understanding that the built environment can have profound effects, both positive and negative, on the natural environment, as well as the people who inhabit buildings every day. A green building is an effort to amplify the positive and mitigate the negative of these effects throughout the entire life cycle of a building.

While there are many different definitions of a green building out there, it is generally accepted as the planning, design, construction, and operations of buildings with several central considerations: energy use, water use, indoor environmental quality, material section, and the building's effects on its site. These elements make up the basic parameters for the different credit categories within the LEED green building rating system.
