Henry Grafton Chapman by Anne Whitney

Henry Grafton Chapman (1804-1842) was a Boston merchant and abolitionist. He and Maria Weston Chapman married in 1830 and had four children before Henry died of tuberculosis in 1842 at the age of 38. Henry supported his wife’s abolitionist activities and writings. This portrait bust of Henry is by Anne Whitney, a sculptor who was also an abolitionist. Her statue of abolitionist Massachusetts U.S. Senator Charles Sumner is also in the collections of the Weymouth Public Libraries.
