To Kill A Mockingbird by Su Blackwell

“The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.”
- Atticus Finch, in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird

Su Blackwell creates intricate, immersive sculptures that are both made from and inspired by books. To Kill a Mockingbird was commissioned for the new Tufts Library. Harper Lee’s classic novel holds particular significance to the Weymouth Public Libraries for its timeless themes, as well as its emphasis on the importance of reading. This sculpture depicts Atticus Finch reading to his daughter Scout from a newspaper, The Mobile Register. The title of the newspaper is one of the many tiny details that Blackwell has meticulously included. If you look closely, you will see Atticus’s glasses as well as several leaves that have fallen from the tree.
