Mayor Hedlund invites residents to participate in a public informational session to discuss opportunities to create a Town wide high priority bicycle travel system for Weymouth. A goal of the Town’s Complete Streets Policy is to create a transportation system and environment in which all modes of transit have access to safe, comfortable travel options. Though implementation depends on location, context and corridor characteristics, bicycle travel is a priority.

“Enhancing bike routes has always been a priority for me. As an avid cyclist myself, I certainly understand the challenges and obstacles the existing roadways present,” said Mayor Hedlund. “I consistently make a point to include bike accommodations in the road projects that I have sponsored. This is a great opportunity to further enhance and add to the growing network.”

The purpose of the public meeting is to discuss the feasibility of providing safe on-road bicycle accommodations along the major streets in Weymouth connecting the four village squares. If deemed feasible, there is an opportunity to apply for MassDOT funds to implement bicycle routes on either a trial basis or for permanent implementation. The streets the Town will be studying for bicycle travel include: Pleasant Street, Union Street, Commercial Street, Neck/River Streets, Green Street, North Street (partial), Water Street, and Broad Street.

Following the public outreach process, key Town department officials will meet to refine the options and decide the feasibility for each route.  A final plan with recommendations for implementation and testing will be completed and presented.

Mayor Hedlund anticipates that the Town will be ready to submit application to the state sometime this Winter. If the Town is successful in receiving funds, it is possible we could see a bicycle travel system in place by this Fall.

To provide for multiple participation opportunities, the Town will hold two public meetings via Zoom. One is scheduled for January 26, 2021 and the second on January 27, 2021. Both meetings will be held at 6:00 P.M. and will cover the exact same topics so it is not necessary to attend both.
