What are setback requirements?

Setbacks, or building setbacks, are the minimum required distances between the building on a property (either principal or accessory) and the street line it faces, as well as its front, rear, and side property lines. All parts of the principal building must comply with setback requirements with the exception of outdoor patios, stairs, walkways, and stepped access ways into the building. The minimum setbacks for each zoning district are listed in the Town’s Schedule of District Regulations. One story accessory use buildings such as garages and sheds must be no closer than five feet from a side or rear lot line (see Zoning Ordinance Article XV, Section 120-55).
