Public Computer Use Policy

As part of our mission to provide intellectual, cultural and recreational interests to the Town of Weymouth, the Weymouth Public Libraries provides free access to public computers for library patrons and guests to enjoy.

Use of the Weymouth Public Libraries public computers for any illegal purpose is prohibited, including but not limited to: 

  • Transmission of threatening, harassing, defamatory or obscene materials
  • Using a public computer as a staging ground to gain unauthorized access to the Weymouth Public Libraries’ network or computer system or any other network or computer system.
  • Obstructing the work of others by consuming a large amount of system resources or by deliberately crashing any computer system within the Weymouth Public Libraries.
  • Making any attempt to damage computer equipment or software.
  • Making any attempt to alter software configurations.
  • Making any attempt to cause degradation of system performance.
  • Using a public computer for illegal or criminal purposes.
  • Accessing or sharing sexually explicit materials.
  • Engaging in any activity which is deliberately or maliciously offensive, libelous or slanderous.
  • Representing yourself as another person for the purpose of fraud or other illegal activity.
  • Using the Weymouth Public Libraries internet system to upload, transmit, or post copyrighted or protected material and/or software to the Internet without the permission of the owner or person owning the copyright or other intellectual property rights in the transmitted materials. Downloading from the Internet copyrighted or other protected materials must be done with the express permission of the owner or otherwise authorized persons regarding copying, redistribution, modification, or publication.
  • Distributing advertising, junk mail, or spam

Patrons may use a public computer for one 90 minute session. Extensions may be given at the discretion of reference staff and may be denied for any reason. 

Patrons may not download or save any files or applications to public computers. Files should only be saved to preformatted discs. Any files or browsing history used during a session will be deleted permanently after logging off of the computer and will not be able to be recovered. Patrons accept financial responsibility for any damage they cause to Weymouth Public Libraries property.

Public Computers in the Children’s Room are to be used only by children, or adults who are accompanying a child. Public computers in the Teen Room are to be used by people in grades 7-12 only.

Public computers will shut down 15 minutes prior to closing time.

All other Weymouth Public Libraries policies apply, including but not limited to the Wireless Internet Policy, Appropriate Library Use Policy, Safe Child Policy, and Digital Media Lab Policy.
