I own or am considering purchasing a lot. Is the lot buildable?

Whether or not you can build on a lot depends on the zoning district in which the lot is located as well as what you intend to build. Residents and business owners can use Weymouth's Property Viewer to determine the zoning district in which a property is located. Allowable uses of buildings and land in that district can then be reviewed in the Weymouth Zoning Ordinance. Residents and business owners can consult with a Town Building Inspector in the Department of Municipal Licenses and Inspections (Building Department) to receive a formal determination on whether or not a lot is buildable. The Building Department is responsible for the interpretation and enforcement of the Weymouth Zoning Ordinance. The Building Department offers walk in office hours 7:30 am – 9:00 am and 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm Monday through Friday, which is a good place to start for an initial determination. In addition, staff in the Department of Planning and Community Development provides administrative support to the Board of Zoning Appeals and Planning Board. They work closely with the Building Department regarding new developments in the town, as well as assist in the permitting and zoning determination processes. To set up an appointment to meet with the Planning Department's staff, please call (781) 340-5015 during the Department's normal business hours.
