I want to start a business at home. Does my business meet the zoning requirements?

Residents and business owners can use the online Weymouth Property Viewer to determine the zoning district in which a property is located. Restrictions on business uses in that district can then be reviewed in the Weymouth Zoning Ordinance.

The majority of the Town is within the R-1 zoning district (single-family residential) and detached one-family dwellings are the only permitted use. A professional home office or home occupation are permitted as accessory uses only. The Accessory Use section of the Zoning Ordinance (Section 120-12) regulates accessory uses. A home occupation is allowed if there is no display of goods visible from the street; there is no nonresident employee; the business may not occupy more than one third of the gross floor area of the residence; and it shall not take place in an accessory building. In a professional home office, no more than one nonresident office or assistant is allowed.

Residents and business owners can consult with a Town Building Inspector in the Department of Municipal Licenses and Inspections (Building Department) to receive a formal determination on whether or not a business use is permissible. The Building Department is responsible for the interpretation and enforcement of the Weymouth Zoning Ordinance. The Inspector of Buildings, or his designee, is the Town’s official zoning determination officer.
