Can I add a deck or addition to my home?

Decks and additions must comply with the setback requirements in a property’s zoning district. Use Weymouth's Property Viewer to determine the zoning district in which your property is located. Then use the Town’s Schedule of District Regulations to determine whether or not the proposed deck or addition will satisfy the setback requirements. For assistance with this determination, residents can consult with a Town Building Inspector in the Department of Municipal Licenses and Inspections (Building Department). The Building Department is responsible for the interpretation and enforcement of the Weymouth Zoning Ordinance. The Inspector of Buildings, or his designee, is the Town’s official zoning determination officer. The Building Department has walk-in hours 7:30 am – 9:00 am and 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.

To receive a permit for construction, residents need a certified plot plan prepared by a registered land surveyor or professional engineer, showing the proposed deck or addition. If the structure complies with the dimensional and setback requirements of the property’s zoning district, you'll only need to complete a permit application with the Building Department and submit your drawings and plot plan. If the structure does not comply with these requirements, you may apply to the Board of Zoning Appeals to request relief from the Weymouth Zoning Ordinance. Click here for information on applying to the Board of Zoning Appeals.
